Amid               all               the               excitement               of               extreme               couponing,               you               may               be               like               my               wife,               who               thought               she               could               shave               some               money               off               our               monthly               grocery               bill               by               getting               into               couponing.

We               decided               to               start               small               --               not               extreme               by               any               sense               of               the               word.

We               did               not               have               a               subscription               to               any               newspapers,               so               before               we               started               we               bought               a               Sunday               paper               from               the               biggest               newspaper               in               our               area               (the               Seattle               Times)               and               sat               down               with               the               coupon               section               to               see               how               we               would               do.

We               were               eagerly               optimistic               as               the               front               of               the               paper               even               had               a               bright               green               logo               advertising               hundreds               of               money               saving               coupons               inside.
Before               I               tell               you               how               I               did,               I               need               to               tell               you               about               how               we               already               shopped               for               groceries,               since               our               habits               aren't               likely               to               identically               match               yours.

Like               many               Americans,               both               my               wife               and               I               struggle               with               our               weight.

We               are               not               morbidly               obese,               but               we               both               have               ten               to               twenty               pounds               we               would               like               to               see               gone.

We've               tried               a               few               diets,               but               for               the               most               part               we               simply               try               to               eat               healthy.

For               us,               that               means               cooking               our               own               meals               at               home,               incorporating               veggies               in               every               meal,               and               staying               away               from               most               things               white:               rice,               flour,               potatoes,               etc.
That               being               said,               when               we               sat               down               with               that               first               Sunday               paper               we               purchased,               we               came               to               a               realization               that               they               don't               make               coupons               for               the               biggest               items               in               our               food               budget!

There               are               no               coupons               for               fresh               meats,               fish               or               eggs.

And               they               don't               do               coupons               for               fresh               fruits               and               veggies.

If               we               were               going               to               save               hundreds               through               extreme               couponing,               it               would               require               us               to               begin               purchasing               items               we               rarely               ever               purchased               in               the               first               place.
The               items               that               you               find               advertised               through               coupons               are               the               packaged,               processed               foods               which               are               extremely               convenient               but               terrible               for               your               waistline               and               your               health.

We               do               not               buy               Pop               Tarts,               Captain               Crunch,               or               Lunchables.

So,               in               reality,               we               could               not               save               hundreds               on               our               monthly               grocery               bill,               because               we               are               not               buying               the               high               profit               margin               items               which               manufacturers               and               grocery               stores               can               afford               to               discount.

These               are               the               foods               that               are               causing               American               waistlines               to               bulge!
I               find               it               ironic               that               the               most               recent               edition               of               the               Sunday               Seattle               Times               had               a               front-page               story               about               the               obesity               epidemic               in               Washington               State               and               in               the               US               as               a               whole,               with               millions               being               spent               to               combat               this               problem.

Yet,               extreme               couponing               still               takes               the               country               by               storm               and               people               still               eat,               in               vast               quantities,               the               foods               which               are               so               bad               for               maintaining               a               healthy               weight               and               a               healthy               life.
Americans               face               a               heard               choice:               to               eat               for               health               or               to               eat               for               economy               and               convenience.

Or               put               another               way,               the               choice               is               to               pay               now               or               pay               later.

If               you               spend               more               in               making               healthy               eating               choices               now,               you               will               save               in               the               long               run               by               having               a               better               quality               of               life               and               lower               medial               bills.

But               if               you               choose               to               cut               corners               now               in               order               to               save               a               few               bucks               on               your               grocery               bill               and               have               the               speed               of               those               convenient               grab-and-go               items,               your               health               and               your               wallet               will               both               suffer               in               years               to               come.
