About 'seniorcare'|Is Adult Day Care The Right Senior Care








On               Wednesday,               the               Motion               Picture               &               Television               Fund               (MPTF)               announced               that               they               will               be               closing               their               famous               nursing               home               facility               located               in               Woodland               Hills               by               the               end               of               2009.

CEO               of               DreamWorks               and               Chairman               of               MPTF's               Board               of               Directors               Jeffrey               Katzenberger               stated               that               attempting               to               maintain               the               facility               could               bankrupt               the               entire               organization               within               a               few               short               years.

The               MPTF               nursing               home               is               reported               to               be               losing               as               much               as               $10               million               a               year.

There               are               about               100               residents               at               the               facility               that               will               need               to               be               placed               at               other               homes               in               the               area.

The               facility               currently               employs               about               290               personnel.

The               MPTF               was               established               in               1921               by               actors               Charlie               Chaplin,               Mary               Pickford,               Douglas               Fairbanks,               and               D.W.

Griffith               to               raise               money               for               other               industry               professionals               in               need.

The               hospital               and               long               term               care               facility               was               established               in               1948.

It               has               long               been               a               source               of               pride               in               the               Hollywood               community.

The               closure               of               the               facility               is               symbolic               of               the               crisis               that               many               health               care               facilities               across               the               country               find               themselves               in.

The               costs               of               health               care               and               health               care               insurance               are               so               astronomical               that               even               the               most               well-funded               facilities               like               MPTF               find               it               impossible               to               stay               afloat.

The               skyrocketing               costs               have               encouraged               a               shift               to               home-based               care               with               visiting               nurses               and               family               caregivers.
               One               of               the               greatest               drains               on               the               facility's               finances               came               from               the               on               campus               acute               care               hospital               ward.

The               ward               was               apparently               only               being               used               by               a               handful               of               patients               at               a               time               and               the               cost               to               keep               the               ward               running               was               astronomical.

Tillman               tried               to               deflect               the               impact               of               the               announcement               by               stating               that               the               organization               will               be               "expanding               other               community               based               efforts."               CEO               of               the               MPTF               David               Tillman               stated:               "We'll               still               be               there               for               our               people               to               make               sure               they               get               the               care               they               need               and               deserve.

We               will               work               closely               with               all               our               current               patients               and               their               families               to               ensure               a               safe               and               successful               transition               for               everyone."
               I               toured               the               facility               as               part               of               a               social               work               seminar               on               aging               two               years               ago,               and               I've               always               thought               of               MPTF               the               elder               care               facility               that               all               other               facilities               should               be               judged               against.

The               MPTF               provides               assisted               living               facilities               for               more               active,               independent               seniors,               long-term               care               facilities               for               those               who               need               more               day-to-day               assistance,               and               an               on               site               hospital               ward               that               provides               critical               care               and               end-of-life               care.

At               that               I               visited               in               early               2007,               they               were               in               the               process               of               building               an               Olympic-sized               swimming               pool.

The               facility               also               boasts               a               restaurant-style               dining               room,               private               bungalows               where               couples               can               live               together,               an               on-site               beauty               salon               and               a               rose               garden               with               flowers               donated               by               Elizabeth               Taylor.

Jennifer               Hudson               and               Ben               Affleck               had               recently               hosted               movie               nights               for               the               residents               to               screen               their               new               films               at               the               on-campus               theater.

Despite               the               glitz               and               glamour               of               the               place,               what               I               remember               most               was               the               philosophy               of               the               staff               members               that               I               talked               to               that               worked               there.

There               was               a               deep               sense               of               gratitude               for               being               able               to               work               at               a               place               that               was               providing               its               residents               the               absolute               greatest               care               possible.
               In               Tillman's               statement,               he               assured               reporters               that               MPTF               staff               was               working               to               ensure               that               all               100               residents               were               placed               at               alternate               facilities               in               the               area               that               met               their               needs.

Having               seen               what               most               of               the               elder               care               facilities               in               the               Los               Angeles               area               are               like,               it's               hard               to               believe               that               most               MPTF               residents               will               find               a               new               facility               that               meets               their               needs               in               the               same               way               that               they're               being               met               now.

There               have               been               no               reports               since               Wednesday               of               big               name               Hollywood               actors               coming               together               to               raise               money               to               save               the               facility               in               the               way               that               Chaplin,               Fairbanks,               and               their               friends               did.

It               seems               that               the               organization's               motto               of               "We               Take               Care               of               Our               Own"               has               become               yet               another               victim               to               the               economic               crisis.
