When I find myself in times of trouble Mother Mary comes to me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be And in my hour of darkness She is standing right in front of me Speaking words of wisdom, let it be from the song: "Let It Be" by The Beatles I'm an LA native. Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. But for the past 20 years or so I have been residing on the West Side of town - and for the last 8 years, in sleepy, cinema-industry-friendly Culver City. My initial introduction to Culver City was as an attendee of the 1st National Scholastic Press Conference on March 21, 1972. A dozen or so of my fellow staff members of the John F. Kennedy High School weekly newspaper "The Word," rode a creaky bus from Granada Hills to interview then Vice President Spiro Agnew (remember him?), at venerable Veterans Auditorium. It seemed like that old bus took forever and that Culver City was in another state. Today, I realize that Culver City is as much a state of mind as anything else. I want to tell you about a place up the hill behind my home in Culver City. It's not far. About a 15-minute, albeit strenuous walk. I live near the cross-streets of Sepulveda and Sawtelle. From my house, once you pass the alley and the coffee shop, hair stylist, falafel joint, TWO bars, the aquarium store, the dry cleaner and hobby shop...then cross the street and pass the Jack in the Box and El Rincon Elementary School...and once you cross another street, you begin a short but challenging uphill trek through what is known as Culver Crest. Destination: Marycrest Manor. One day, about two years ago, I was taking this walk and I happened to find a turquoise crucifix in the gutter. More spiritual than religious, I felt compelled to pick up the crucifix, gently rub it with my thumb to clean it and then I did something that even surprised me...I kissed it. I carried it with me up the hill and when I reached Marycrest Manor I knew just what to do. Marycrest Manor is a skilled nursing facility located at 10664 Saint James Drive - at the very top of Culver Crest - and provides assisted and intermediate care for senior citizens in a religious atmosphere. Francis Cardinal McIntyre founded it in 1956. Since 1962, it has been under the direction and sponsorship of the Religious Sisters of Charity from Ireland. In 2002, the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles assumed sponsorship. It enjoys a tranquil setting with spectacular views nestled amidst a large manicured crop of purple Agapanthas. As soon as you enter the driveway a petite rose garden and a statue of Mother Mary meet you. The statue belies her pacific charm as she is symbolically standing on the neck of the serpent. We know it's "the" serpent of Adam and Eve because it has an apple in its mouth. There are a few other unique features of the statue: 1) she is completely flat-chested so as to exhibit zero sexuality, (which is understandable being that she is the Virgin Mary), 2) Mary's right index finger is missing (kind of like Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead), 3) Mary's right big toe is missing and 4) Mary's left hand has been shattered and patched back together again. So, when I reached the top of the hill that day a couple of years ago with the turquoise crucifix, I knew just what to do. I humbly knelt before the statue and paid my respects. Despite being brought up in a fairly religious and observant Jewish household, I was also taught to respect all religions and all faiths and have always thought that it was pretty cool that Jesus was Jewish. So, I knelt before Mother Mary and I thanked her for my blessings. I thanked her for my health. I thanked her for my family. And I thanked her for my friends. Then, I placed the turquoise crucifix at her feet, and as if I was in a synagogue kissing the torah, I placed my fingers to my lips and then with those fingers, I gently touched her missing toe, missing finger and broken hand. In subsequent visits over the past two years I have brought her more crucifixes and rosary beads - items I have received in the mail as the reward for giving to a number of charities. My youngest daughter, Erika, who just turned six, likes to accompany her papi from time to time. When she was just four I would push her in a stroller and really get a workout climbing that hill. But now, she walks by my side and leaves flower petals at Mary's feet and copies how I kiss Mary's boo-boos. One day we noticed that the turquoise crucifix was no longer at Mary's feet. We looked high and low for it. Of course, we are not the only ones who visit the statue. There are always an assortment of rocks and plant life strewn at her feet in her honor, as an offering of sorts. Recently, someone left her a smooth, pink, glass object...but alas; our turquoise crucifix is gone. At first I was shocked and upset that someone would take this from the feet of Mother Mary, but Erika said, "Daddy, I'll bet the person who lost it in the first place found it here and took it back." I smiled at Erika and said, "I'll bet you're right." And then we both knelt and kissed Mary's boo-boos and silently I thanked her for all my blessings. |
